Phaedrus & The Allegory of The Cave 2014

With this new body of work, Margarita's inspiration is derived from various Caravaggio paintings, life models and found images, reappropriated to explore Plato's Phaedrus (Theory of Love) & The Allegory of The Cave. "These paintings are visual musings on the ancient Greek philosopher's theories of love (philia), eros, lust and possession; played out in Plato's desire for a higher level of understanding of the self, the other and the universe. The Allegory of The Cave is a philosophical metaphor for truth, from imagination, illusion toward experience and knowledge" say's Margarita. "I have chosen both narratives in combination, as I wish to explore the concept and understanding of love, as intertwined with or parallel to the illusion, imagination and experience that love manifests toward the journey of truth".
